Debit Card Fee Drama

Chase and the Bank of America report more user friendly debit card fees and processing of fees. But read the fine print on these changes carefully. They have not eliminated these fees. Not even close. Instead, they’ve added a floor of $10 or $5 in daily overcharges before they’ll start charging fees, will stopping clumping daily charges together to get the maximum number of fees per day, and will max out at 4 fees per day. Both will also start offering an opt-out to debit card holders...

Exempt Assets Grabbed?

If a creditor has taken money from your account in New York which you think should be “exempt” here’s what you need to do: Contact your bank immediately. They should have sent you an Exemption Notice with an Exemption Claim Form for you to fill out. Ask them for it, if they haven’t sent it to you. Fill out the form and deliver it to the bank. I suggest walking it in, or certified mail, return receipt requested. You must also deliver the form to the creditor, or its attorney...

Frozen Bank Account?

If your bank account’s been frozen by a creditor, you should get a notice from your bank telling you what’s going on…and giving you the opportunity to challenge the freeze. Of course, you should consult an attorney, and if you can’t afford one, go to Lawhelp.org to find one for free. Or check with the court clerk about what’s going on.
